When the Alaskan Pipeline was being built, there were many Texans who went to Alaska and found work on the pipeline. The Texans could only work a few hours in the frigid weather, before they could no longer stand the conditions they were up against.  The native Eskimos could work indefinitely in the cold with seemingly effortless grace.  After a while of watching this situation, a study was put together to find out why the Eskimos were physically superior to the Texans.  The study showed no difference in skin thickness, blood, or any other characteristic that would explain the Eskimo’s ability to work despite the circumstances.

The solution came when they did a psychological study. Read More

As many of you know, we have been praying for Mandy Lathim, who was in a car accident 18 days ago.

Last night she left earth for Heaven.

It seems that there are certain stories that just bring the reality of life and death to the forefronts of our hearts and we are forced to ask a lot of questions.  Why did that accident have to happen in the first place?  Why couldn’t God have chosen to heal her?  Why is this the ending that we all have to grapple with?  WHY? Happy Birthday to me!  I’m celebrating today with a new look for my blog and my very own website – www.stacynewell.com!

Thirty-six years ago my birth was announced to the neighborhood with a 4′ x 8′ sign.  My dad is a sign painter and wasn’t letting the opportunity go to show off his new baby girl!  I was the first girl born in my line of geneology in over 100 years and he was excited about having a daughter. He scrambled to finish the sign when I unexpectedly arrived one month early.  (And that’s my mom in the picture, too.  Yes, she had just given birth a few days before this photo!)

its a girl

As I grew up, gave my life to Jesus, and tried to follow His will for my life, sometimes I fell into the trap of assuming that my Heavenly Father would also announce the rest of my life with giant, unmistakable signs:

  • Go to this university!
  • Marry this man!
  • Do this with your life!

And although there are some times in the Bible where it does seem that God speaks with that kind of clarity, most of the time, He simply doesn’t.  It actually came as a shock to me that He allows, and even forces, us to make our own decisions as to where and how we will live out our lives in many instances.  Many times when we just want God to tell us what to do, it seems like He says, “Well, what do YOU want to do?”  It’s obnoxiously frustrating, but such an amazing gift when you stop and think about it.

Rather than mandating our agenda at every step, He often says, “Use your passions, your giftings, and your talents to LOVE Me.”  That’s it.  The complex God of the universe gives us the opportunity to creatively express our love for Him in every type of vocation, in a multitude of worship styles, and without constantly worrying about whether or not we’re making a mistake.

I think far too many Christians are doing nothing for God because they just assume that a sign will show up on the front lawn if He ever has a plan for their life.  Guess what, He does have a plan for your life and here it is:  Love Him with your heart, your hands, your feet, your money, your sweat, your blood, your tears, your passions, your strengths, your weaknesses, your fears, and your inadequacies.  Don’t wait for Him to tell you when to give, what to do, and who to reach out to.  If you see someone lost, hurting, poor…that’s your sign.  That’s the only sign you may ever get.  If He does send you a giant sign, do that, too, but in the meantime, throw yourself at a cause greater than yourself.

Part of Mark and I’s story is that we never really felt a clear direction about starting a church.  We never got the sign that God was asking us to specifically go in that direction.  What we did know was that we had to do something to reach people with the love of God and our passion was within the walls of this thing called church.  We attacked launching North Creek like it was a life or death situation.  We just figured that God would stop us if He ever needed to.  So far, so good.

So, what are you waiting for?  Have you spent too much time questioning whether God would really want you to pursue your passion?  Are you gripped with fear that you’ll do the wrong thing at the wrong time?  Let it go.  God is big enough to stop you if He needs to, but in the meantime, you might just impact the world.

I am loving the Amazing Stories series! It’s so fun to have our teaching team share one of their favorite stories/characters from the Bible.  I just love the Bible.  Go to www.youversion.com to set up a Bible reading plan for your own life.  What is your favorite story from the Bible?

Since last Sunday, we got to meet the third baby this month!  Zephan Thalhofer was born on Monday, July 9 to proud parents Josiah and Vanessa Thalhofer.  Josiah is on our teaching team and Vanesa is the Children’s Pastor at Battle Ground.  Couldn’t be more proud of these two!

Apparently the floodgates of new guests opened up at Hazel Dell yesterday.  We were blessed to meet a lot of new people and hope that you all had a wonderful time at our church.  It’s our goal that you have a comfortable experience and that we can help you find the right church home for your family!

We have absolutely the best volunteers at our church!  They not only serve when they are on the schedule, but people jump in and help anytime they see a need.  That’s a strong church when people take responsibility for THEIR church.

Two of the new babies came to church yesterday.   Little Cora was at Battle Ground and Skyler was at Hazel Dell.  Not to mention the ton of other babies around!  It’s baby madness at North Creek!  We have another little boy due tomorrow, so watch for that announcement SOON!

Chris Harold filled in for worship leading at Battle Ground yesterday.  You didn’t know he could speak and sing, did you?  I wonder if he can dance, too?  Matt did a great job, as usual, as well.  So blessed by worship leaders who love the heart of God!

The KidCity room at Hazel Dell got a makeover this week!  It’s not quite done, but it’s great!  It brighter with some new paint, fresh carpet tiles on the floor, and some super cool artwork going up over the next couple of weeks.  The same look will be done at Battle Ground in August, so stay tuned!

Last week our two sermons were on Samson and Samuel.  This week is was Barnabas and Barrabas.  We didn’t plan that.  Our team might just indeed share a brain!

Our missions team leaves for the Dominican Republic on Friday.  Would you commit to praying for us over the next couple of weeks?  We will be working with teenagers who need to know the love of Jesus.  This might just be the Coffee Church’s specialty!

Do something encouraging this week for someone else who needs to know the love of God.  Hope you are blessed as well!

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

This verse and MANY more like it are littered through the pages of the Bible like confetti after a celebration. God clearly has a loud and clear message for His children: Be fearless.

Even as we read that, something inside of us pushes back. “Fearless? Have you read the news? Do you see what COULD happen to you? Or what if someone laughs at me? What if I fail? What if I’m making a mistake? What if I think God said it, but He didn’t? What if it costs me something I love? What if it costs me my life?…” The playback in our heads when we think about being fearless is literally overwhelming.

The other extreme we tend to go to in our mind is that we should be REALLY fearless and try to prove that death has no power over us. That’s when you read the news about people playing with venomous snakes and running through heavy traffic. Yes, that’s fearless, but it’s also stupid.

That means that somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot with God. Somewhere where stupidity stops and the death grip of the unknown is released from our lives. It’s the place where we understand the victory that God has given us and we walk in the confidence of that as we do the daily things He’s asked us to do.

As I raise my two children, it is the fear and the insecurity within them that I wish I could take away the most. I know that they have the ability to rise to the challenge. When they fall short, not because of the lack of talent, but rather the lack of trying due to fear, I cringe to the core of my being. I see the potential and, as a mother, I see how simple the task before them REALLY is, not their perception of it. How similar it must be as our God watches our lives! If only we could let our perceptions fade into the reality of God’s view!

The biggest problem with living a life gripped in fear is that we also live lives without miracles. Being fearless results in the hand of God moving in ways beyond our means and that is the part of Christianity that is inspiring and compelling! Maybe that’s why God says to be fearless over 300 times in the Bible…He really wants to show us the awe-inspiring, all powerful, miraculous God that created the universe at the snap of His finger and parted the Red Sea at the request of a man. When we “get” being fearless, He gets to be a Holy God in full display in our lives.

So, what’s your fear? What do you worry most about? And what would happen if you just let it go?
